Sake in Hida Takayama

Takayama’s cold mountain winters and local rice suit sake brewing, and the old town around Sannomachi still has a cluster of family breweries within a few hundred metres. A green sugidama (cedar ball) over the entrance announces the new season’s sake; it turns brown as the months pass.

Seven breweries in the old town open shops with tastings on the city’s official list: Harada, Kawashiri, Hirata, Hirase, Niki, Funasaka and Oita. Tastings at Funasaka, Hirase and Oita are listed as free; others charge a small fee.

Guided options

Happy Plus runs a 30–45 minute English-guided visit to a historic brewery with five to eight sakes. A two-hour walk tastes at six breweries in small groups, and from November to March a Funasaka visit can be combined with a cooking class. Between early January and late February, the city notes that eight breweries take turns opening their brewing floors for a week each.

Planning tips

The old town is a 10-minute walk from JR Takayama Station. Breweries open early, often from 8:00 or 9:00, and close around 17:00, so plan tastings for the daytime. See the Takayama breweries guide for a walking order.

Frequently asked questions

Do Takayama sake breweries charge for tasting?

It varies. The city’s list shows free tastings at Funasaka, Hirase and Oita, ¥200 at Harada, and paid tastings at Kawashiri, Hirata and Niki.

Do I need to book a Takayama brewery visit?

Not to taste at the shops. Guided tours, and Hirata’s reserved brewery tour (about 40 minutes, ¥4,000), need a booking.
