Saijo is one of Japan’s three famous sake districts with Nada and Fushimi. Its breweries sit along Sake Brewery Street, a short walk from the station: Kamotsuru, Kamoizumi, Fukubijin, Kirei, Saijotsuru, Hakubotan and Sanyotsuru. Each has a well; Hiroshima brewers developed ways to make fine sake from the area’s soft water in the late 1800s, which helped Hiroshima ginjo win national fame.
Opening hours differ between weekdays and weekends, and some breweries close for lunch or leave staff only on call, so check our brewery list or the tourism authority’s hours page on the day.
The local tourism authority runs a two-hour, English-guided tasting tour of three or seven breweries from JR Saijo Station, also sold on GetYourGuide and Viator. Arigato Travel’s three-hour tour adds a local lunch. From Hiroshima there is also a full-day tour that combines Saijo with Kure.
Saijo is on the JR Sanyo Line east of Hiroshima; local trains take around 40 minutes. The town’s sake festival in October is its busiest weekend; book tours and trains early if you go then.
Yes. Most of the seven breweries open shops with tastings, several without booking. Kamotsuru’s museum shop is free and open daily from 10:00 to 18:00.
Half a day is enough for the guided tour or a self-guided walk; allow a full day if you add lunch and several tastings.
